Michael Wilkinson

Director of The Wild Ones

Michael has been with The Wild Ones since January 1995, and has been director since June of that year. Since 2000, he has taught math and science at the Fieldston Lower School. Prior to that, he taught 10 and 11 year olds mathematics and environmental science at the Bank Street School for Children. As director of The Wild Ones, Michael keeps this web site in shape, edits The Wild Times, and helps members to become more active.

"Choosing a favorite animal is hard, because there are so many interesting animals. I guess the red-tailed hawk is my favorite bird, lemurs and lion tamarins are probably my favorite mammals, and I find all frogs fascinating."

In July 1997, I visited the Jersey Zoo on the Channel Isle of Jersey, UK. While I was there, I recorded the voices of several of the animals in their collection. The real treat was getting to help feed the Aye-Aye! We stuffed pieces of bamboo stems with about 80 grubs. The Aye-Aye use their long middle claw to tap the bamboo and listen for hollow spaces. When they find a hollow space, they chew a hole and fish out the grubs with that long nail. Visit the Aye-Aye page for more information about these curious animals.

In July 2001 I had the unique opportunity to go on Safari with the Wildlife Trust. We visited four of Tanzania's National Parks on this trip. You can read more about our safari in the Tanzania Safari Journal on this web site.
